... and a Bonus Secret that Nobody Will Tell You But Me

Growing your audience is (and I can't say this loud enough) about one thing and one thing only:

INCREASING YOUR SALES.

Bottom line? That's the only thing that matters. Yes, being true to yourself and helping others matters, BUT - and here's the kicker - if you aren't making money doing that, then what's the point?

Helping people is great and it makes us feel all warm and fuzzy. But you can't pay your bills or your employees on warm and fuzzy feelings. You have to generate money from sales to pay your employees and bills.

Growing your audience is something lots of people on the internet talk about. I see "experts" every day telling me that the way to grow my audience is organic and I just need to keep sharing on social media over and over, and while that is one way to grow your audience it isn't the only way to increase leads and sales.

It isn't just about posting content and letting it sit there. You have to work a tiny bit to gain results.

Here are the 5 Cs of audience growth as I see it:

  • Clarity of message: What is your message? What is the thing you want your clients and potential customers to know?
    • If you don't have clarity of message your audience will feel confused and nobody wants more confusion in their lives.
    • This is the NUMBER 1 thing to know and to speak about every chance you get.

  • Courage (and confidence) to put yourself out there: Sticking to your message every time you interact with your audience gives you courage.
    • Have the confidence to engage with others, knowing you are an expert in your field. If you need to start small, start chatting with people in the comments section of others' posts.
    • This is not to steal away their clients or potential clients but to bolster your own confidence and credibility. Courage will follow.

  • Content creation: Keep creating content with your message, even if no one interacts with it right away.
    • Putting your face or brand out there is key to being comfortable enough to talk to others about your business. The old saying is true "If you build it, they will come".
    • Creating content also helps show you/your business is active and an expert in your field.
    • Creating ads from the content that you share is where it's at. I'm not talking about boosting posts on Facebook. I'm talking about creating real, beautiful display ads.
    • I not only focus on social media content, but I also create social media ads and display ads.
    • Ever wondered why that pair of shoes you drooled over at Nordstrom.com was now an ad in your newsfeed? - Remarketing.
    • Remarketing is very important if you want to increase your sales. Once you have someone click on your ad or go to your website, you can continue to get in front of them by retargeting them with your content all around the web.

  • Community interaction: Join social media groups and get on the social media platforms your clients and potential clients use the most.
    • Do whatever you can to interact with others in your niche. Interact with your audience by replying to them if they take the time to comment on your posts. Respond in your own voice. Be genuine in your comments and replies because people can tell when you're not being authentic.
    • If someone leaves you a review, respond to it - even if it's a negative review. It's important to respond to people. Remember, every interaction is a conversation!
    • People love knowing other people, and brands, on a personal level so don't be afraid to be yourself. Just keep interacting consistently with others in your niche!
    • I like to post about my family and business life because that's what's important to me. I am not just a businesswoman, I am also a wife and mother. Because I'm all of those things I am able to help more people with my expertise.
    • Once I've had people interact with me, now I can get in front of them with retargeting.

  • Consistency is key: Stick to your message and keep creating content. If you need to take time off, make sure you have scheduled content for that time away.
    • I like to create content ahead of time and schedule it even if I'm not taking time off. Typically, I create content three or four times a month and schedule it. I also like to post the same content on multiple platforms, but tweak the share text a bit so if someone follows me on Pinterest, Facebook, and Instagram, they don't get bored with the same message.
    • Utilizing remarketing to put your content in front of the same people, and people like them, is how you grow your audience. For pennies a click, you can grow a bigger audience with consistent results.
    • Consistently engaging with your audience and potential clients, getting your content and ads in front of them - that's how you "grow your audience" and increase your leads and sales.

Here's a bonus for you. It's a secret that nobody will tell you but I will because I'm a nice person.

You don't even need a large audience to increase your sales. You need the RIGHT audience. It doesn't matter how many people are following you on Instagram. It doesn't matter how many clicks your website gets. It only matters WHO those clicks are coming from. Bots don't count. Real people with real money to spend who are looking for your goods and services are the right audience. Through remarketing and retargeting you can increase your sales from the audience who is ready to say yes to your message.
